In South Africa’s Western Cape, meanwhile, in a town at the edge of the Karoo, an old-favourite B&B has been given a makeover at the hands of a London-based rising star. The Robertson Small Hotel (therobertsonsmallhotel.com; from $415), under the unerringly chic eye of 28-year-old Sophie Ashby of Studio Ashby, has quietly emerged as the area’s only five-star accommodation, with Giò Ponti-like flashes and custom Delft-style tile work enlivening a c1910 national monument. Ten Suites, two pools, cyclical art displays and a restaurant overseen by Ashby’s little sister (and alumna of Skye Gyngell’s Spring), 26-year-old Rose Ashby, round out an offering that may well put the unassuming town of Robertson on tastemakers’ radar the world over.
