About the Artist:
Born in Namibia, Kyle Weeks is an interdisciplinary photographer based between Amsterdam and Cape Town. Since graduating with a BA in Photography from the Stellenbosch Academy in 2013, Weeks has experienced an explosive professional career as an artist, culminating in an assemblage of personal projects, publications, exhibitions, and editorial commissions. While his experience is vast, the through-line of Weeks’ work remains steady, best described as an infallible dedication to subverting photography’s normative standards and the colonial gaze.
His covetable images, born out of a unique ability to tell entire stories in a single image, have taken the world by storm. Primarily challenging the portrayal of African communities in Western society, Weeks’s work captures the pulse of youth cultures around the African diaspora, whilst remaining critical of photography’s historical use as a means of subjection and misinterpretation.
His photographs have appeared in Dazed and Confused, i-D, and Time, and his wide-ranging work includes shoots in the Congo with Belgian-born musicians Petite Noir and Baloji, numerous fashion shoots, including one for Vogue and another in Accra, Ghana with stylist Ibrahim Kamara, and two series on the Himba people of Northern Namibia.
