Sisters II by Philip Maltman
Sister By Studio Ashby’s has commissioned Phillip Maltman on a series of work called Sisters for the latest ‘Artist In Residence’.
Philip Maltman was born in Scotland in 1950 where he grew up in Maybole, only two miles from the sea. His family moved to London in 1966 and Maltman enrolled into Ravensbourne College of Art & Design where he met several influential Fine Art tutors. After years teaching and leading successful Art Departments in South London, in 1999 he was included in John Moore’s Painting 21 Prize exhibition. Shortly after, Maltman gave up teaching and devoted his time to painting. He has since gone on to win multiple awards and was a finalist for the Rise Art Prize in 2018. In 2019 Sophie Ashby commissioned Phillip to create a series of works for Studio Ashby and has been featured in numerous projects over the years due to his palette’s inherent fit with Studio Ashby’s design sensibilities.
Sisters is a series of paintings commissioned by Sister and inspired by Devon landscapes and the market town Totness where Sophie grew up and shared fond childhood memories with her sisters. Sophie & Phillip have retraced their steps through country lanes, down rolling hills and on the banks of the River Dart to combine passions and inspire this range of expressive and abstract works that feel in constant motion due to Phillip’s techniques, composition and choice of palette.
