About Us
Studio Ashby was founded in 2014 by Sophie Ashby, who is half South African, half English and grew up between Stellenbosch, Cape Town and the UK before broadening her architectural and design sensibility through a BA in History of Art at Leeds University, and going on to study Interior Design at Parsons, The New School for Design in Manhattan, New York.
Sophie is also the co-founder of United Design, a charitable initiative which launched in July 2020 with a mission to address the lack of diversity in interior design, and in 2021 launched the retail offshoot Sister by Studio Ashby, which opened its first bricks and mortar home at The Blewcoat School in St James’s Park in 2022.
Today, the studio is led by Sophie alongside Partners Fiona Blanchot and Nicola Koller, ensuring the studio’s vision is carried across all work with the same depth of care and creative rigour. Together, the team creates spaces with a unique identity, looking to bring authenticity to each project, unswayed by the passing dictates of fashion.
Our diverse portfolio spans a Grade II listed Edwardian Arts & Crafts home fronting Hyde Park, a six-storey Georgian villa in Holland Park, a contemporary family home in Brighton, a luxury pied-à-terre in Mayfair, a jewel box apartment in Belgravia, a brownstone in New York, a family home in Hong Kong and boutique hotels in South Africa, Mallorca and London.
In 2026, Studio Ashby opened an office in Cape Town, deepening the studio’s connection to South Africa.

The Blewcoat School
A stone's throw from St James's Park, nestled in a rare skyscraper-less clearing on Caxton Street, sits the Grade I listed Blewcoat School, which is home to Studio Ashby and our shoppable world, Sister. Blewcoat is a commanding presence in the area, having stood there since 1709, when it was built as a school for the underprivileged – a Bluecoat School. In 1899, the Blewcoat charity relocates to a purpose-built space, leaving the building as an elementary school. The name, however, remains through the decades. In 1954, the building is purchased by the National Trust to house a gift shop, which remains operational until 2013, when bridal wear designer Ian Stewart reimagines it into his showroom.
As Studio Ashby becomes the next custodian of this magical and historic site, we aim to create a sense of home for all who visit. From clients to Sister shoppers and brand partners, Studio Ashby’s tenure at Blewcoat transforms it into a go-to destination that connects with and grows our wonderful community.
