Kensington Family Townhouse
The owners of this expansive Victorian terrace in South Kensington wanted a contemporary, clean, and uplifting home, favouring materials and sculptural furniture over patterned fabrics or wallpaper. The Grade II listed house was expanded by Cousins & Cousins with a loft conversion, a double-height basement extension, and an open-plan front salon, allowing natural light to flood the space. A monochromatic palette of white walls, ceilings, and curtains was complemented by sharp black accents in metalwork and fixtures, creating a modern feel. The design balanced mid-century-inspired, angular furniture with a mix of materials like matte and shiny finishes, including burl timber, lava stone, and honed marble. The owners preferred subtle, lightweight details, such as barely-there radiators and transparent window framing. The home’s design prioritised practicality and personal needs, with a bespoke primary bathroom featuring a double shower and a creative, multi-functional eaves space for the wife. The ground-floor salon, with its deep blue walls and convivial curved sofa, became a cozy spot for family and guests. This home exemplifies how a simple, calm backdrop, with thoughtful details and textures, can create a stylish and functional sanctuary for busy family life.
