Artist Showcase: Katarina Lalic
Sister by Studio Ashby is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Katarina Lalic. Katarina Lalic (b. 1998) is a London-born painter working from her studio in Hackney, primarily in oil. Her practice explores abstraction through layered surfaces, dense textures, and gestural brushwork, drawing inspiration from natural forms and landscapes. From mountain contours to the intricate interiors of seashells, her paintings evoke sensations of place, memory, and time within the natural world. Katarina Lalic is the first artist to be presented through our Open Call Artist Showcase, a platform dedicated to supporting and highlighting emerging contemporary practices.
'the soft world, hewn'
‘the soft world, hewn’ is an ode to the natural world and its many shifting forms — fragments of landscapes that become transformed through abstraction into imagined, atmospheric environments. Beginning from a specific visual reference, Katarina allows the process of painting to remain instinctive and open-ended, embracing uncertainty as compositions evolve. Across the works, a personal visual lexicon emerges: contours of mountains, megalithic forms, dirt roads, and the patterned surfaces of shells recur as distilled memories and impressions. These collected fragments are layered, obscured, dissolved, and reconfigured through paint, creating compositions that hover between recognition and invention. The resulting paintings remain intentionally ambiguous, inviting viewers to project their own interpretations and imaginatively inhabit these unfamiliar, shifting landscapes.
